The Journey of Lucy McElroy: From Art Teacher to Renowned Portrait Artist
Lucy McElroy’s artistic journey is as compelling as the portraits she creates. For nearly two decades, Lucy inspired countless students during her 18-year career as a secondary school art teacher. Passionate about her role as an educator, she found immense joy in guiding young artists and helping them discover their creative potential. Teaching also served as a catalyst for her own artistic development. As Lucy explains, “I loved teaching others, and it really improved my drawing skills.”
Yet, alongside the satisfaction of teaching, there was a persistent tug—a yearning to dedicate more time to her own art. Watching sixth form students immerse themselves in their creative projects left Lucy longing for the same kind of uninterrupted focus.
That opportunity came when she shifted to part-time teaching after the birth of her second child. Determined to prioritise her creative ambitions, Lucy began carving out precious moments to draw and paint, often using her own children as her subjects. These intimate portraits caught the attention of friends and family, who began commissioning her work. What started as a small side project soon grew into a thriving artistic career.
A Full-Time Artist with a Passion for Experimentation
Today, Lucy McElroy is a full-time artist, celebrated for her expressive portraits and versatile techniques. Despite the demands of commissions, she remains dedicated to exploring new ideas and mediums in her personal practice. For Lucy, this experimentation is essential. “It’s the creative experimenting which keeps it exciting,” she says, underscoring her commitment to growth and innovation as an artist.
Portraits for Every Preference and Budget
Lucy’s portfolio is as diverse as her clientele, with options to suit a range of styles and budgets. Her small pencil drawings, starting at just £150, are known for their fine detail and precision. Larger pieces in charcoal deliver a dramatic flair, perfect for making a bold statement.
Lucy’s favourite medium, however, is oil paint, which she describes as wonderfully versatile. “It’s perfect for creating a life-like look as well as for expressive mark-making,” she explains. Whether it’s the realistic texture of skin or the dynamic energy of brushstrokes, her oil portraits capture both technical mastery and emotional depth.
A Personal Experience of Commissioning Lucy
Lucy’s work is not just about creating beautiful images; it’s about capturing the essence of her subjects and forming meaningful connections with her clients. Lucy created this art work for us:-
"Lucy created the most amazing piece of artwork for our home. She took the time to visit our house to see where the piece would hang and met the whole family, getting a sense of all our personalities. We then spent an afternoon at one of our favourite spots—a little stream where the children love to paddle in the summer. Lucy took photographs of the children playing, laughing, and splashing in the water. It was such a fun experience and gave her a real understanding of their characters."
"Lucy came up with several compositions and walked us through the options for materials. We ultimately decided on a charcoal drawing of the children in the water. The result was stunning—a piece that feels alive with movement and personality. Framed to complement the beams in our room, it’s now one of our most treasured possessions. Thank you, Lucy!"
